Treble clef line notes: E G B D F
From the bottom up, the five lines of the treble clef are E, G, B, D and F. The usual way to remember them is Every Good Boy Does Fine. Any sentence with the same first letters works, such as Every Good Bird Does Fly or Elephants Got Big Dirty Feet.
Treble clef space notes: F A C E
From the bottom up, the four spaces are F, A, C and E. Together they spell FACE.
Lines and spaces take turns, one letter apart: E F G A B C D E F from the bottom line to the top line.
Landmark notes in the treble clef
The treble clef grew out of a written letter G. Its curl circles the second line from the bottom and marks it as G, the G above middle C. That is why it is also called the G clef.
Learn these on sight and count the rest from the nearest one.
- Middle C (C4): on the first ledger line below the staff.
- Treble G (G4): on the second line, where the treble clef curls.
- Treble C (C5): in the third space.
- High C (C6): on the second ledger line above the staff.
Notes above and below the staff
Notes past the staff are written on ledger lines, short lines that carry the staff on for one note. They still take turns between line and space.
- Below the staff, D hangs just under the bottom line, middle C sits on the first ledger line, B hangs under that ledger line and A sits on the second ledger line.
- Above the staff, G sits just on top of the top line, A sits on the first ledger line, B sits just above it and high C sits on the second ledger line.
