What MasterPiano is
MasterPiano is piano software for adults. It teaches you to read music fluently and to play the pieces you love, with real-time feedback on every note you play.
Connect a MIDI keyboard, or let the microphone listen to your piano. Each note is checked as you play it, so you know straight away what went well and what to work on.
MasterPiano runs in your browser, on iOS and on Android.
Built by a pianist working through the ABRSM grades.

How every piece gets its level
Every pianist and every piece sits on the same scale, from 1 to 100. One scale for both lets us match you with music you can actually read, and shows you how far you have come.
Measured from the notation
We read each score and measure what makes it hard to read at sight: how many notes fall on each beat, the shortest note values, accidentals per bar, the range across the keyboard, the size of chords, how often both hands play together, syncopation, how independently the hands move, the key, and how often the hand changes position.
A model compares those measurements with pieces whose level is already known and places the new piece on the scale.
Checked against real playing
When pianists play a piece, each result tells us whether it was too easy, about right or too hard for their level. When the evidence is strong, we move the piece and log the change.
Mapped to exam grades
Grade numbers follow the graded exams of boards such as ABRSM. The mapping comes from where graded pieces actually land on our scale, so it is approximate by design. A grade here describes the pieces you can read at sight. It is not the standard of the sight-reading test in an exam, which uses easier music.
| Levels | Band | Approx. grade |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 10 | Starter | Pre-Grade 1 |
| 11 to 20 | Beginner | Grade 1 |
| 21 to 30 | Elementary | Grade 1–2 |
| 31 to 40 | Developing | Grade 2–3 |
| 41 to 50 | Intermediate | Grade 3–4 |
| 51 to 60 | Fluent | Grade 4–5 |
| 61 to 70 | Advanced | Grade 5–6 |
| 71 to 80 | Expert | Grade 6–7 |
| 81 to 90 | Virtuoso | Grade 7–8 |
| 91 to 100 | Master | Beyond Grade 8 |
Library pieces go up to level 90. Levels 91 to 100 are for pianists who read beyond Grade 8. Your own level starts with a short placement on real pieces and moves as you play.
The library
The public library holds 7,000+ pieces, from first-note exercises at level 1 to Grade 7 and 8 repertoire at level 90. Classical works, traditional songs and sight-reading exercises, all on real sheet music.
Our data, in aggregate
8,200+ pianists have a MasterPiano account. Since January 2026 they have played more than 16 million notes across 300,000+ practice sessions. Our own team, test and demo accounts are excluded.
We only ever publish aggregates like these, never an individual pianist's data. Our privacy policy explains what we collect and why.
Editorial standards
We publish guides, reviews and comparisons of piano apps. This is how we write them.
We test the apps we compare.
Our reviews come from using each app ourselves, on a real keyboard when the app supports one.
We say when we compare our own product.
MasterPiano is our product. A page that compares it with other apps says so.
We correct mistakes.
If you find an error on any of our pages, tell us through our contact page. We fix it and update the page.
